I'm bored of stereotypes for kids September 16, 2009 18:09

I watch plenty of kids TV, not by myself of course, that would be worrying, no. I watch it with my little children and I’m increasingly irritated by the fact that ‘baddies’ are always depicted with the evil that’s inside them, all over their faces. You always know who the baddie is in kids programs, it’s totally obvious. Just as the honey haired softly spoken girls are always perfect goodies. This kind of thing sets kids up to judge by appearance and not by actions and bares no resemblance to the real world. Darstadly moustaches are not the sign of evil, more a flamboyant display of stylish silliness. Beautiful young ladies are not always the innocents they seem. I remember watching a TV show called Babylon 5, years ago. It was a sci fi series and there was an alien race of lizard things with red eyes, should’ve been the baddies but in this case they were a bunch of meditating wise dudes. Totally unexpectedly, and the reason I remember it is because it was the first time I saw such a contrast of outward appearance and inward beauty. We need more of that kind of thing for kids. I know we are supposed to keep things simple for them but perhaps in keeping things too simple we inadvertently teach the wrong message…
